Hi I'm dr. kluever an optometrist witheye surgeons associates welcome to fYItoday I'd like to talk to you about thevisual acuity and visual field standardsfor driving getting or renewing yourdriver's license can be stressful timefor some especially for the elderly asthey may be concerned that their visionmay not be good enough to pass the testwith today's short video I hope to giveyou a basic overview of the 2015standards of what is expected visuallyto maintain a driver's license I willfocus on the states of Iowa and Illinoisas we die surgeons have offices in bothlocations in the state of Iowa to get anunrestricted license you must havetwenty forty vision or better in atleast one eye if the vision in one eyeis worse than twenty forty but at leasttwenty 70 you can still get a licensebut will not be allowed to drive oneheadlights are required if the vision inone eye is worse than twenty seventy butat least twenty two hundred a licensecan be issued under discretionary reviewprocess that may have to be approved bya Medical Board most importantly thatwould also involve taking a behind thewheel driving test if the vision in oneeye is worse than 22-hundred no licensecan be issued bioptic telescopes whichare low vision accessory devices are notallowed to achieve any of the standardsthat I just discussed the visual fieldrequirements for licensure and Iowa areas follows keep in mind that when wediscuss binocular we mean using botheyes when we discuss monocular we meanthe field measurements out of just oneeyeif the binocular field is equal to orgreater than 140 degrees no restrictionsexist if the binocular field is between110 and 139 degrees then the vehiclemust have left and right outside mirrorsif the binocular field is less than 110degrees or the monocular field is lessthan a hundred degrees but the personhas greater or equal to 75 degrees ineither the monocular field or thebinocular field then a behind the wheeldriving test will be required if themonocular or binocular field is lessthan 70five degrees a behind the wheel test isrequired along with medical review boardapproval the license will be denied ifthe monocular or binocular field is lessthan 20 degrees in the state of Illinoisthe acuity standards for both anunrestricted license and a daytime onlylicense are the exact same as Iowa nowif the vision in one eye is worse than2070 but at least 2100 then a bioptictelescope will be required in most casesalong with the driving test and boardapproval in this situation though nightdriving will not be allowed at any timethe license is denied when the vision isless than 2100 and one eye the visualfield requirements for Illinois are asfollows the unrestricted requirementsare the exact same as Iowa now if thebinocular field is between 105 and 139degrees and one eye has at least 70degrees temporally in 35 degrees nasallythen the vehicle must have left andright outside mirrors the license willbe denied if the monocular or...
